Tell us about your business:
Mamo + Parker Public Relations (MPPR) is a full-service beauty, entertainment, fashion and lifestyle public relations and event management agency. Our innovative and integrated publicity, marketing and guerilla outreach campaigns position brands to engage, inform and influence audiences.

What inspired you to start your business?
Realizing that I would never be able to do the type of work I wanted to do and work with the people I wanted to work with if I always had someone else was delegating those things to me.

What has been the biggest challenge in your business and how have you dealt with it?
My partner, Brahaani Mamo, and I struggled to grow our clientele in the beginning. When we started MPPR, neither one of us had held positions that allowed us to do business development. It was a struggle to learn how to approach potential clients and or respond to requests for proposals. Every client and every proposal is different, but we’ve definitely crossed that invisible boundary that held us back in the beginning.

What would you say has contributed to your business success?
Perseverance. Brahaani and I are both law school graduates. In starting our business, went down a totally different path than what was expected. Even though we had people close to use who didn’t quite
understand what we were doing and didn’t fully support our dream, we continued to work toward that dream. This trait carries over into every client engagement and every project we complete.

What advice would you like to offer to other women/moms who are thinking about starting a business?
Figure out what it is that you want, and put everything you have into making your dream become a reality. A successful business doesn’t grow overnight, for the most part. Train yourself to visualize the end goal then use your time to get closer and closer to that goal. Know going in that you’re going to work hard. But, the rewards of that work can’t be duplicated if you’re truly going after what you want. In the midst of all of your goal setting and reaching, stay organized, in all
aspects of your business.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of being an entrepreneur?
The most rewarding aspect of being an entrepreneur is having the ability to choose. I get to pick which projects I work on, which clients I work with, and how I work with those clients. I don’t have
to sacrifice what’s important to me to meet the ideologies of someone  else. It’s an amazing feeling.

What is your favorite tool/resources you use for your business and why?
Hootsuite. We do a lot of social media work, and Hootsuite keeps everything organized. We can see every action taken across multiple accounts without moving from dashboard to dashboard. I don’t know what
I would do without it.

How do you manage your personal and business activities?
It’s a tightrope act. We all have the same number of hours in the day, so I’m not going to say I don’t have time. But, I’m often running one activity, be it business our personal, into the next with very little time for a break. I prioritize every single day. I cut out what’s unnecessary and make sure I take care of who what’s important to me.

Looking back, is there anything you wish you’d done differently?
I wish I would have followed my passion a bit sooner. I knew what  wanted long before I pursued it. I was too afraid of failure and worried about what other people thought to go after my dreams. But that’s all in the past, so I’m keeping it moving in the present.
