Tell us about your business:
My company Maddisin and Mason Gifts is a provider of fabulous and unique baby gifts and shower décor. Our Baby Bloom is our signature item and the one that really put us on the map. All our in-studio creations are designed by us and crafted by hand; making each its own unique creation…no two are ever alike! We are undergoing a transformation right now to become a one-stop shop for all things baby shower! From a simple classic get together to an elegant upscale affair we will be offering all you need from invitations, to décor, to linens. We are also in the process of adding the most fabulous line of nursery bedding and décor along with unique and super cool infant toys. We already have a baby registry in place, our goal is to have enough ‘must-haves’ that mommies-to-be will see the value with registering with us vs. the larger chain stores.
What inspired you to start your business?
For as long back as I can remember I’ve been ‘drafting business plans’ or all sorts of different businesses with the hope and dream of owning my own company some day. After I lost my job my family needed some form of second income on top of what my husband brings home and the bricks just sort of all fell in a row, before I knew it, almost accidently, I had Maddisin and Mason Gifts up and running and we’ve been growing ever since.
What has been the biggest challenge in your business and how have you dealt with it?
Being a one-woman show requires a lot of time…when you put together all the administrative aspects of starting/running a business like website creation and maintenance, accounting, PR and marketing and so forth…and then couple that with the fact that most of our most popular items are all made by hand…time management becomes a huge issue. Especially now that I am back to work I find that most of my Maddisin and Mason Gift’s work has been relegated to late evening/nighttime hours after my kids are in bed. It’s really the only way to be sure that my kids get ‘mommy-time’ each day (and I get kiddo time). But working until the wee hours of the morning and having to get up and be at work early gets exhausting at times.
What would you say has contributed to your business success?
The ability to offer a handcrafted item that most people have never seen before…even those who have seen similar items always comment on the quality of construction and the attention to detail that goes into each piece.
What advice would you like to offer to other women/moms who are thinking about starting a business?
Choose something your passionate about, understand from the beginning that you need to be completely devoted to your company and that it will take a lot of hours and perseverance to see success. At times you may need to sacrifice for the better of your company, but if you are starting it for the right reasons then it won’t seem like you are sacrificing anything at all. Also, hook yourself up with a good entrepreneur group, it can be wonderful source of information, support and advice.
What is your favorite tool/resources you use for your business and why?
I have found joining groups of other entrepraneuers, especially moms, has been the most useful tool…in a good and active group you can turn to them for advice, ideas, suggestions and more!
