Tell us about your business:
Twice Loved Boutique is a clothing resale and consignment store in Belfast, Maine. Back in December 2007 we started by selling on ebay and the business took off and by May 2008 we had a store front! We offer the best selection of gently used clothing in the area, and do our best to keep in stock only fashionable, in style and unique clothing for our customers. We have something for everyone, from Newborn to Full figured adults, along with outerwear, jewelry, shoes and other accessories. We also have a selection of new toys and books from a local Barefoot Books storyteller.

What inspired you to start your business?
My inspiration started when I was a child. My father was self employed, and his father managed a successful feed and garden supply store. My mother’s parents ran a highly popular flea market and did auctions, so I guess it was just instilled into me at a young age that I shouldn’t have to work my whole life to earn someone else a paycheck!

What has been the biggest challenge in your business and how have you dealt with it?
I think my biggest challenge has been around my kids. I was a stay at home mother and then a work at home mother for years. The first 2 years that my store was in business it was right at home in our converted garage. This past spring (2010) I relocated to a larger city and business took off. Over the summer it was difficult, between not having a reliable babysitter for the kids and having to bring them with me, to just missing out on being with the kids and doing fun family things.

What would you say has contributed to your business success?
I think the biggest reason my store has succeeded is because I am constantly marketing. There are other places in the area with similar businesses that have become hostile toward me and my business because it has grown so quickly and I get the word out everywhere. I don’t let it get to me though, I know I’m just taking full advantage of the opportunities that have been made available to me, and that’s what will continue to help me grow. That and my fantastic customer service! 🙂

What advice would you like to offer to other women/moms who are thinking about starting a business?
My biggest piece of advice is research, research, research! You should constantly be trying to educate yourself on every aspect of your business. You need to know what your competition is up to, you need to find creative ways to keep your business in front of your target customers, and you need to find ways to present a positive image!

What is your favorite tool/resources you use for your business and why?
Facebook, absolutely… Facebook and then in close second would be Twitter and my blog. Facebook is absolutely the biggest customer generator for me.

Share one business goal you have for your business:
This year I’m working on hiring employees, my goal is to actually be able to take a day off to spend time with my family again by the end of the year, without having to worry about missing customers or losing out on business.
